Huge Turnout in West for CHOICES Career Show

Published: Monday | November 1, 2010 1 Comment and 0 Reactions

WESTERN BUREAU:

Students from schools in St James, Westmoreland, Hanover, Trelawny and St Ann turned up in Montego Bay last Thursday for the 10th annual career expo put on by Choices Career Advice organisation.

Choices is a career-placement and publishing company.

The expo was held at the West Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in Mount Salem, St James.

This year's seminar, dubbed 'Get on Track for Career, Education and Life', marks the third time the expo has been held in the Montego Bay area.

In addition to displays, short talks on preparing for a career were presented by representatives from various agencies and corporate entities - including The Gleaner, the Caribbean Institute of Technology, the Tax Administration Services, International University of the Caribbean, COK Co-operative Credit Union and Montego Bay Community College.

Angela deFreitas, general manager of Choices Career Advice, was impressed by this year's turnout of high school students.

"We're very pleased with it, considering what's happening with the economy in the country and throughout the world," she remarked.

"People still actually put career and education as the priority, and we're seeing that they're still turning out, because the information is of such value that they really think it's going to be a way out."

Kamala Smith, an 11th-grade Anchovy High School student with aspirations for the medical field, had high praises for the seminar in helping pupils to make their career choice.

"It has been a really good expo, and we have learned a lot about careers and education and life and a lot of things," she said.

Akeisha Kelly, an 11th-grade student of Little London High School, echoed the sentiment.

"I was here at the expo last year, and I think it's very interesting, and we can actually learn and benefit from what they [the presenters] are saying," she noted.

Of Montego Bay, CHOICES, Students. Students and More Students

Prizes and many surprises were the order of the day at CHOICES Get On Track For Career, Education & Life Seminar on Thursday October 28. In between all of the fun, excitement and laughter on stage were presentations from educational and other institutions, CHOICES Career Advice on the subject of "How to Choose the Right Career", an essential leadership training seminar for teens, a fabulous song contest to end the day on the theme "Everyone Has Choices" and much much more.
Students from schools in St. James, St. Ann, Trelawny, Hanover and Westmoreland gathered for this one-day event at the West Jamaica Conference Centre.
The 3-4 hour road trip leading us to the capital city of the parish of St. James was beautiful with breath-taking glimpses of the pearly blue Caribbean highlighting our path intermittently.
A careful drive through the hills of St. Mary and down the famous "Junction", considered dangerous even for seasoned drivers, was the prettiest route we could have chosen. The hills were alive and talking to us through the various shades of lush green leaves, bushes, trees in low valleys and ravines and through springs of clear, sparkling water rushing down the hillsides and ending in small, shallow wading pools on the roadside.

Special thanks to our partner The Gleaner Company and associates, COK Co-op Credit Union, The International University of the Caribbean (IUC) and the Tax Administration Services Dept. Also to our prize sponsors - Kirk Distributors; YES/HECOIN for a scholarship; Dolphin Cove for entry passes; Maggi for gift baskets, aprons and bags; Tour Wise for horse back riding passes; Cornwall Beach for entry passes; Beyond Jewellery for jewellery; Soft Sheen for baskets;T.Geddes Grant for baskets; Sangster's book store for vouchers; Honey Bun for bags and baked products; Pier One; Burger King; Tortuga Rum Cakes and Palace Amusements for entry passes.
We'll be back there again soon. You can join us.
