CHOICES HELPS BAJAN STUDENTS AT SMOOTH TRANSITIONS WORKSHOP

Twenty young Barbadians proved to be eager participants in the second Smooth Transitions Career Camp staged at The St. Michael’s School in the Barbados capital, Bridgetown, in August, 2018

.

The participants, in the age group 13 – 19, were drawn from a cross-section of that island’s secondary schools and spent a week learning more about their personality, interests, skills and suitable careers, in addition to how to prepare themselves for the world of work. Poise and deportment were introduced by a special guest, Miss Alexandria Secondary School, Ebony Forde.

After using The Career Key Test and other materials provided by CHOICES Career & Education Advice, the group researched careers suited to their personality and which they had never thought about and were challenged with mock interviews and the elevator pitch speech.

In addition to having the opportunity of practical experiences such as creating their own vision board to guide their future success, they also engaged in sporting activities, ice-breaker and team-building exercises, a treasure hunt and talent show.

According to Angela deFreitas, General Manager of CHOICES, whose company partnered with Smooth Transitions in presenting the career camp, “The career camp was a unique idea, conceptualised by Smooth Transitions, was well-received by those who participated and should certainly help them in moving forward successfully”. A transition camp for students moving on from 6^th to 7^th grade was held simultaneously and was equally as successful.

FIND THE RIGHT CAREER AT CHOICES SHOW APRIL19 IN MANDEVILLE

 The mid-island staging of CHOICES Career & Education Show will take place on Tuesday April 19 at The Golf View Hotel in Mandeville from 9a.m. – 4p.m. This will be the 6th staging of the event in that parish and the first of four major CHOICES career and education events for 2011. Others will be staged in Kingston in June and August and Montego Bay in October.

Students, teachers, guidance counsellors, parents and persons concerned about making the right career choice are expected to attend from Manchester and nearby parishes including St. Catherine, Clarendon, St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland. They will get an opportunity to learn how to choose the right career and the educational path required to take them there.  An exhibition will be set up featuring educational and other related institutions.

On the day’s schedule will be a leadership training workshop for students conducted by Mrs. Brigette Levy, Leadership Specialist with The Leadership Institute, a professional development session for educators and a Career Key Workshop for selected participants who will be taken through the career decision process using The Career Key Test.

At the show, talented, creative youngsters will also get the chance to compete in the third leg of the CHOICES Theme Song Competition.  Entrants must produce two-minute songs that are clean and  motivational, include the CHOICES slogan “EVERYBODY HAS CHOICES” and be developed around the concept of making good career choices.

Asked about the staging of this show in Mandeville, General Manager of CHOICES Career Advice, Angela deFreitas noted that, “CHOICES is committed to helping all Jamaicans to get on the right career path.  It is therefore imperative that we extend this offer beyond the main metropolitan townships so that students in all nooks and crannies in Jamaica can benefit”.

Prizes and many surprises were the order of the day at CHOICES Get On Track For Career, Education & Life Seminar on Thursday October 28. In between all of the fun, excitement and laughter on stage were presentations from educational and other institutions, CHOICES Career Advice on the subject of "How to Choose the Right Career", an essential leadership training seminar for teens, a fabulous song contest to end the day on the theme "Everyone Has Choices" and much much more.
Students from schools in St. James, St. Ann, Trelawny, Hanover and Westmoreland gathered for this one-day event at the West Jamaica Conference Centre.
The 3-4 hour road trip leading us to the capital city of the parish of St. James was beautiful with breath-taking glimpses of the pearly blue Caribbean highlighting our path intermittently.
A careful drive through the hills of St. Mary and down the famous "Junction", considered dangerous even for seasoned drivers, was the prettiest route we could have chosen. The hills were alive and talking to us through the various shades of lush green leaves, bushes, trees in low valleys and ravines and through springs of clear, sparkling water rushing down the hillsides and ending in small, shallow wading pools on the roadside.

GREAT DAY OUT FOR ALL AT CHOICES CAREER & EDUCATION EXPO - KINGSTON LEG

They sang; they danced; performed; listened keenly and drank in of all the fine information and opportunities presented before them.
The near 1500 students, counsellors, teachers, parents and others who attended the Kingston leg of the 2010 CHOICES Career & Education Expo at UTECH's Auditorium left well pleased with what had been presented to them during the course of a full 9a.m. - 5p.m. day. They had their fill of career counselling, talks, presentations and entertainment.
With the official opening with its formal speeches and wise words of advice completed, they were ready to begin. The presentations on stage were well received and ran smoothly in between song and dance performances by the International Youth Fellowship (IYF); Dominique Hemmings, 6th former at Kingston College on the sax, The CHOICES Song Contest and The closing show featuring a fashion fiesta by KAJU and a spell-binding performance by Jamaica's own fine and fabulous Nickiesha Barnes. Emcee on Stage, Craig Mc Nally, kept the pace lively and the audience happy.
Teachers and counsellors were enthralled by the special talk presented by Dr. Herbert Gayle, sociologist and anthropologist, on the subject "Whither Our Boys" while the boys benefitted from "Boys To Men" a talk specifically to help them to get on track and stay there which was conducted by Mr. Kayson Jones.
In attendance were schools from as far away as Montego Bay, Trelawny and Hanover. Some students got up as early as 3a.m. to make sure they did not miss their transport to the capital.
